The 23-year-old Dutchman Gian van Veen claimed the biggest win of his career, defeating world number one Luke Humphries 11–10 in a thrilling final at the European Championship 2025 in Dortmund. It marks Van Veen’s first major PDC title and propels him into the world’s top ten.
The tournament delivered world-class darts from start to finish. After pre-tournament favourite Luke Littler was knocked out in the second round by James Wade, the path seemed clear for Humphries to defend his title. But Van Veen had other plans.
Having already beaten Michael van Gerwen 11–9 in the semi-finals, the young Dutchman showed nerves of steel in the final. Despite trailing 0–3 early on, he battled back leg by leg to level the match and eventually edged out Humphries in a deciding leg.
The win earned him £120,000 and moved him up eight places to seventh in the world rankings, his first time inside the top ten.
